Last night, I was attempting to assembly modified bsa wheels/axles to body for possible July wirl race. All of a sudden as I was inserting axle in body, I realized the wheel/axle combination was not going to be good......way too much wobble. I'm using Max Velocity's speed axles with coned heads and modified bsa wheels. I have used Randy's axles with standard wheels and enjoyed great success.
Even with the axle all the way in, it was too loose and had the wheel in a bind. I'm guessing the coned head on axle is the problem?? Is anyone else running coned axle heads with modified wheels?

I used Max V's speed axles for my may entry. They worked out well, with some wobble though. You may want to try axles with a thicker diameter. I think the Nitro axles that derby guy sells on ebay are larger. Also I think PinewoodPerformance sells axles, not sure of the diameter.
Good Luck, John.

a lot of people use Nitro Axles. They are little thicker in diameter... they are plated hinge pins as are Max V's I belive, or Max V's are not plated...

Our speed axles are zinc-plated, and are 0.087 in diameter (just a bit larger in diameter than standard axles). You might want to check the diameter of the nitro axles before purchasing.
The bore size of BSA wheels varies considerably depending on the mold. I have measured from 0.091 to 0.0098. So, with the larger bores, there will be some slop. An option is to use 'Awana' axles. They are very similar to the speed axles, but are 0.091 in diameter. I will be offering them in the fall.
The coning on the axle head is not enough to cause binding. I suggest you check the outer wheel hub to make sure it doesn't have a problem.

if you have a lathe and the patience Pine-Pro Axles are almost .100" and have room for error when machining. The Nitro Axles run .093" - .095" and I think the Royal Racer nails aren't much different but the heads are consistantly off center by a mile it seems, I can't use them... and I forgot Rand's were plated it says them right on his site. I have found them to be prefect for number 9 and 14 molds.

How were the heads on your nitro axles ? My head were off center. I guess since they are ment to be hinge pins that would not matter much. Do you know of a source for the pins other than ebay ?
John.
