I have posted our proposed rules for our district. www.PwdRacing.com/cbd_rules_2007.htmlI am interested in getting feedback. The OPEN division is fashioned to fit the WIRL Modified class. I am hoping to get some parents to race more than once a year with their son's car! Thanks!

Excellent rules, I like that you laid it out without trying to make rules you can't enforce. I am thinking about using your rules (if it alright) for ours. I'm afraid our district guy is going to try and do four wheels must touch and no extended wheel base, but I will work on that next year. Heck I ruined a car last year trying to get four wheels on the ground, I can't build that well!!!!

Rules are what they are, and as long as they are detailed well, there should be very little misunderstandings (hopefuly!). The only rule I have never liked, as Woody mentions above, is the "four wheels must touch" rule. It is SO much easier for the scout/parent (or any of us for that matter!) to align three wheels instead of four!! The easier you make it, the more work cubs, especialy tigers, are able to perform, and the less us parents will get in the way!!! Good Luck with your race! Warp Speed

Wow, really good. Very descriptive and the most constructive diagrams I have ever seen for wheels/axles.

Ok, after round-table I have made a quick update - - - I added the diagrams from the older instructions. People missed the tree!!! The new old diagrams show the car dimensions and some wheel samples. . . I have to find the originals and clean up the axle diagram and add a H style to the unacceptable wheel shapes . . Other thoughts/comments: I had thought of adding that the tips of the axles must be visible for inspection in order to detect the blunt and pointy after market axles but the thought of having to drill inspection holes was too much! I have a jig that is used at the workshops that lets people make their own super speed axles. . . . mirror finish and slight taper on head. Most of the district winners are coming from the workshops for the past several years. I'm sort of glad to say that folk who try to buy the trophy usually end up just spending money on parts. The workshops have really leveled the playing field. The final tuning/alignment is important since we use a 64 foot track and no one has been able to buy that yet. I added the tune-thy-self for the Cub division since there are people who are now offering that service. . . . which I may have to try out for the open division. . . . Anything else?

I like your rules. Very specific.
Some questions:
All the districts that I have seen only allow the dry lubricants. Your proposed rules allow the oils. Is that a trend? Are you doing that because it is hard to detect oil use like Krytox? Better to let all use then only the cheaters?
The wheels cannot be lightened. What about saning the interior to balance the wheel? (Our district does not address the interior or lightening, just exterior)
Thanks.

The dry lube only is a modification of the older only graphite rules since the BSA no longer sells graphite! From all that I have learned about the rules is that the purpose of the lubricant limitations has historically been to keep the tracks clean and free of debris.
I hope to have covered the concerns about keeping the track clean(fair for all who follow) and to avoid limiting one of the options that does exist for those who want to push the speed limits.
I mention the known (common?) alternatives to help level the playing field.
I hope that these rules can make headway to other groups for kids. . .

Question on this line:
ยท All cars will be free wheeling with no starting devices. Magnets and slip weights are prohibited. All weights must be securely attached to the car.
What is a slip weight?
Otherwise, I really prefer the set of rules linked to first in the thread. A lot of the wording in the second leads to rules that can't be enforced IE: The axles (nails) maybe polished and stamping imperfections removed but the shape and size of the head may not be altered.
With this one, you technically can't angle the underside of the nail head. Most likely it will not be rejected as long as the taper is not to severe, but that is unfair to those who follow the rule as written.
Just a nitpick, we have the same rule. Don't like. Used to be allowed as long as it was less than 30% of the head, they had diagrams to show what you could and couldn't do. Worked much better in my opinion.
