Anyone who has seen my cars will tell you that they definitely are not built for looks -- but I'm working on that. Thanks to the airbrush talents of a good friend, my next car ("Katana") will be easy on the eyes. Pics to follow as soon as available.

My cars look like they were built for speed and run like they were built for looks. Good one Phil. Sorry I didn't think of it first, I think we could use it as well Bubba

Last year looks. Unfortunately our pack has no design prizes. He did so poorly racing the racing sufficent time to distroy it before the racing was over. So this year we went with a design from his hot wheels, and modified and applied physics to it. Its a "pretty" car with full fenders (good ole bsa ones). Won pack out right, and third at district. Aerodynamics matter little at our speeds (time is better spent on perfecting alignment). Plus if you follow a widely known "fast" design, you/ they are missing out on half of the fun. Have fun, and follow the basics.

I like to think its a little of both, but sometimes it's more speed than looks. here is a few of my cars- here is a balsa old style car- here is another, but non balsa- lets add another one of the old style. yeps, gotta add the wheels and cross members yet. alright- speed time - and the fun stuff-

This was a good thread. There are a few "older" builders that have been inactive for while. It's always interesting to go back and look at some of the early talk. In any event: Do I build for looks or speed? Like Phil said- "My cars look like they were built for speed and run like they were built for looks." Great Line! For me, I REALLY TRY to make a fast car first then make it look as good as possible using all resources available including outsources But lately, I build the car, no sanding or paint, put the wheels on and then track tune as good as I can. If after a few hours of tuning it doesn't look hopeful, we pay a visit to "The Undertaker" and it never see's a drop of paint. Last night I cut out a body, placed the weights, and had it on the track within the hour. I sit here this morning with a cup of coffee looking at it undecided Has anyone else ever done it this way? Or am I beyond the point of no return

Having recently found this sport, I haven't been jaded by the "speed-at-all-costs" concept.....yet !! There is a certain artistry to make these machines go really fast, and I applaud those that can do this repeatedly. Then, there are those that create a wheeled piece of art that have the right amount of eye-candy to turn your head from the slightest glimpse. To marry the two would definitely be a win/win.
I've only made 7 cars, to date, with the latest entered in the Bluegrass. It arrived in Kentucky, slightly damaged, but still roll-able. But that's okay.It looks good. Each of my cars is an extension of me, so they will get a share of my time in which I can share with others. Not trying to sound like a preacher here, but, there is a LOT of give-and-take from this simple sport. I've learned a lot from many and it would be nice to think my little cars can give an idea or two to someone else
I don't think there is a concrete answer to this looks/speed question. To a 7yr.old with a 3" paint brush and paint dripping down his arm, saying,"doesn't this look good,Dad/Mom?" to the seasoned Vet with the airbrushed paint scheme and many speed records under his belt, it's all relative
Me?. I just like to see 'em shine and hear the wheels humming down the slope
