I tried Balsa but it didn't hold the axle very good. I guess I could have plugged a piece of pine where the axle bore is? I have just used Pine and removed as much wood as I can in front of the rear axle. I just ordered some new wood for what I hope is a super fast modified car.

Khouse,
We have built cars with Pine, Poplar, Walnut, and Basswood. Being a scratch builder, one of our preferred wood species is Basswood. The characteristics of the grain are easy to work with being softer than Pine yet harder than Balsa. Basswood cuts easily on a bandsaw or scrollsaw. A painted finish with a couple of coats of an oil base primer will yield a high gloss enamel finish.

Thanks for the info! I know basswood carves nicely.
