Just a question for all of the BSA/Cub Scout PWD racers out there: When is your race? Is it your 1st. or are you an experienced racer? What are you doing different from last year or do you need too?
Thanks

My boys is in early january. This year I am moving the balance point a little more forward 1-1/4 to 1-1/2 inches in front of rear axle, last year they were unstable in the flats.I am not sure what I should do in the way of wheel to body clearance, last year one car had 1/16 and the other car was 1/32.The car that had 1/32 clearance seemed to be a little faster, but does anyone think that is a little to tight?

Pack race March 17th. District race should be May 6th. Previously, our Pack's race was always in February, so we would have to wait for almost 3 months for the District race!!
This is my oldest son's third year (Bear), and youngest son's first year (but I've made him a car the last 2 years). Last season the oldest son's car was the fastest in the pack. After the races, the youngest son raced his car against most of the best cars and was undefeated. By time it was unofficially the fastest in the pack!! He was very excited!!
This season's cars have been designed (3D CAD) since this past spring. I've been working on the weighting. We're going to use carbide strips this year, they will hang down about 3/32 below the body, giving the cars a (LOW!) center of mass 0.10 above the bottom of the pine body. On one of the cars the weight in front of the rear axel will be epoxied to a peice of .03 thick stainless steel (off center front to back) which will allow the COM to be adjusted from 0.82 to 1.03 (from the rear axel). I can move a 3/8" tungsten cylinder to adjust the COM 0.20 more forward. The Pack's track is very rough, the COM should be about 1.20, but the District track is very smooth (wood), so we will probably try a COM of 0.82, depending on how it runs in testing.
We probably won't start building the cars until after the first of next year.

Younger son's race is in March; district race usually runs in May. Last year, we bombed out on the flats due to instability. The CG was too far back, but it SCREAMED down the hill. Working on tuning the alignment and, of course, putting the CG farther forward (1.25").
I wish we had some test time on the track, but all cars run untested.

Our pack here in Beavercreek OH races on the 28th of Jan. This will be our second year racing. Not bragging, but I built 4 cars last year for the "family" to race and we flat whipped em...lol I beat the wife out for 1st in the "others" class and both my boys won their dens. My oldest boy (wolf at the time) won the pack and was the only car to go undefeated in dbl elim racing. Was fun day and we are looking forward to this year as well. Wish the pack had an actual timer instead of just the blinking lights though. would like to know how "fast" the cars are so we can do a slowest/fastest prize as well.. Was kinda disappointed last year that the council or whatever doesnt hold district races. Thanks to my wife's involvement (now the acting Cub Master) We are getting it organized this year for the 1st annual dictrict race hosted at our church...yippy

As a follow up for the race posting, we had the BSA pack race this weekend and my son won 3rd place in the overall pack race and 1st place in the weblos division. The race was real close and the faster cars were all running real good. Great job to the boys who have competed in this pack race.

It was Saturday, January 21, 2005. Just joined the forum today. My oldest son (age 6) won 1st place in the Tigers and made it to the second round in the overall race. He beat a Weblo and then lost to a Weblo. It's a small pack. If he could have won one more time. He would have had third place overall. He also won the Most Scout Spirit award for the design of the car. So he went home with a ribbon (that everyone received for entry), a first place medal, and a trophy for Most Scout Spirit. He also gets to go to the District Race next month on the 20th. I was so afraid that I messed his car up when I had to make some modifications to it. Not bad for his first year. I've had a little experience. I was in Cub Scouts, but what I knew from it was mainly from what I heard from my dad and what I remember from the races. Since my dad did most of the work back then. It took me three years to make it to first place in my Den and make it to third place in my Pack. My trophey was a lot smaller and it was a bigger pack. LOL Not that that is the important part of it. I had fun back then and I hope my son is having fun now.

Our pinewood is on the last Saturday of January every year. We setup in the charter church the night before and start registering cars at 9am Saturday morning.
We award trophies for the following: 1,2,3 - Tiger 1,2,3 - Wolf 1,2,3 - Bear 1,2,3 - Weblos 1st year 1,2,3 - Weblos 2nd year 1,2,3 - Overall 1,2,3 - Sibling 1,2,3 - Outlaw (we pay a $10 entry fee to race) 5 different design categories
This was my son's 2nd year and he didn't repeat his win from last year. He got 4th. My daughter raced again this year and went from 4th last yr to 1st sibling. My wife and I swapped 1st and 2nd outlaw the last two years.

Our Pack race is Saturday, March 11th. We have built a couple of cars and one is quite a bit faster than the other, but we have this week to tune. Maybe I should let him borrow Road Hog II for the race. Naw just kidding. ;D
My son is 3 time defending Pack champ and 2 time District overall champ. I screwed up his Tiger car between the pack & district races the first year. It gets back to the "If it isn't broke, don't fix it rule".
Districts are in April and then it will be back to focusing on my cars and Wirl.

Good luck to your son Buckeye! He has a great Mentor. Joe also races this saturday. He too won pack his Tiger year and finished third in his first District race. He also took 3rd in the Council race. He hopes to match your success with a fist in Districts this year.

We had our District Race this weekend and my oldest took first place. He is beaming! ;D It was our first time going to Districts. What a great experience. Our Council doesn't have a race, so that is it for this year. He says he wants to go for design next year.

Fred,
You're not old enough to have a GRANDSON, are you?!?!?
Good luck to you and yours (although you probably don't need it...) Best wishes for great success.
